Breed Facts
Origins: First discovered in Devon,
England,1960.
Coat: Short and wavy, sometimes suede like.
Character: Active, affectionate,
adventurous, intelligent and very friendly.
Many learn tricks (they can easily be
trained to fetch) and are known to wag their
tails when they are happy! They love to be
part of everything and generally twerp or
twitter, rather than meow.
Appearance
The Devon Rex has a short wide-cheeked face
and huge low set bat-winged ears. The
whiskers are short and crinkly and some have
wrinkly foreheads. Unlike the Cornish Rex's
coat, the Devon's coat contains all three
hair types (guard, awn and down), however
the guard hairs are typically fragile and
stunted.
They shed minimally which means that many
allergy or asthma sufferers who are unable
to enjoy ownership of other breeds, may be
able to live with a Rex.
The coat is extremely low maintenance but
it does not offer the same protection as a
normal coat and as a result, Devons need to
be kept warm as they do feel the cold. The
Devon Rex has a slightly higher surface body
temperature than other breeds to compensate
- making them wonderful lap and foot
warmers.
